The Houston office is currently seeking an experienced paralegal for our Intellectual Property Department. This is a full-time, non-exempt position with excellent benefits. RESPONSIBILITIES: Carry out integrated legal research. Such research might include investigation of federal or state laws and regulations, IP portfolios and filings. Review files and preparation of Information Disclosure Statement and accompanying documents. Review and manage docket for deadlines, understand docket and deadlines and action needed on each file; inform working attorney of deadlines; preparation of weekly docket reports. Review all initial emails sent through client extranet; respond and/or upload to database as appropriate. Assist in drafting correspondence to clients regarding status of applications and patents, including reporting filing receipts for applications, Office Actions, publication notices, foreign filing reminders, annuity reminders and forwarding patent certificates. Assists in filing daily correspondence and USPTO mail, preparation and e-filing PTO documents, maintenance of applications and agreements, handling invoicing and expense cost tracking. Scheduling the filing of patents and responses to office actions. Effect portfolio transfers and manage multi-client portfolios. File and assist in prosecution of design applications (including convention deadlines for filing abroad). Extensive knowledge of U.S. or PCT patent rules and procedure; knowledge of national laws of other countries. Assist in patent filing strategy discussions and due diligence. Track chain of title in U.S. patents and ability to perfect same. Prepare response to Notice to File Missing Parts. Review files and preparation of documents for Reexamination procedures. KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS: Bachelors degree required. Minimum of five (5) years work experience in a law firm environment, or related professional experience. Domestic and basic foreign intellectual property experience preferred. Should have a basic understanding of foreign patent prosecution procedures. Knowledge of filing requirements for convention (non-PCT) applications. Must have knowledge of USPTO rules and procedures. Extensive knowledge and skills in utilizing the Internet, Adobe Acrobat, U.S. Patent Office Electronic Filing System; experience with legal research tools preferred. Previous experience with CPI (Computer Packages Inc.). Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, including MSWord, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, etc. Ability to learn and use databases. Ability to work effectively with a wide range of individuals. Ability to organize and prioritize numerous tasks and complete them under time constraints. Ability to proofread materials for contextual, grammatical, typographical or spelling errors. Must have strong organizational, decision-making skills and problem solving skills. Must be reliable and a self-starter. Ability to operate standard office equipment such as computer, photocopiers, fax machines and typewriter. Read, write and speak English at the college level.
